Ayurveda doshas (Tridosha theory)

The five elements theory and sapta dhatu concepts explain the structure of the human body (anatomy). The tridosha theory elaborates on the function of the human body (physiology).

This may sound over simplistic but does provide useful insight into the complex functions of the body.

Unlike modern physiology which explains the function of every system the tridosha theory mentions three factors which govern the functions of the body namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

This need not surprise us as no system can work in isolation. For example the digestive system cannot work without the control of the nervous system or supply of blood . The heart cannot supply oxygen unless the lungs also work.

Vata literally means movements. It is responsible for controlling all the movements in the body like breathing, circulation, expulsion of fetus from the uterus, passing of urine and feces. This factor mainly refers to the function of the nervous system. Vata is made up of the elements space and wind.

Pitta literally means fire. It is responsible for digestion and metabolism. Hence it includes the function of digestive system including liver and pancreas, cellular metabolism and endocrinal system. This has the characteristics of water and fire.

Kapha refers to the function of supportive tissue and immunity. It means that which holds things together. This dosha has the characteristics of water and earth.

Every individual is born with a particular combination of the three doshas. This is called his constitution. A person can be classified as having predominantly vata, pitta or kapha dosha. Ayurveda recommends individualized treatment based on a person’s constitution.
