Newborn babies and young babies: The most common accident during this period is suffocation. Many so called sudden Infant Death Syndromes (SIDS) are due to suffocation and choking.
It is always safe to sit and breast feed babies. When a mother lies down and breast feeds her baby the nostrils of the baby can get blocked as the breasts are slightly pendulous after delivery.
This is especially common when the mother goes off to sleep while feeding the baby.
Never use a pillow for a small baby. The neck is very short in young babies. It is quit common for babies to vomit till 6 months of age. If a pillow is kept the neck gets bent and any vomited material cannot come out easily. It can enter the windpipe causing chocking and even death.
Do not put a small baby to sleep on the abdomen as this can also lead to suffocation. Do not use very soft beds.
Do not keep mobile phones near babies. It is possible that the radiation may harm the baby.
Once a baby is a few months old ensure that he is never put to sleep on a cot without protective rails. He may roll over. The normal child development varies widely. Do not assume that your child will not roll over yet.
When you buy toys for kids make sure those toys are safe. Toys should not have sharp edges or easily detachable parts.
Babies put everything into their months. Toys with lead paints should be avoided as lead poisoning has been reported.
Is your baby one year old? It is time to be extremely careful about child safety. A one year old kid can drive parents crazy. Toddlers can often do what we cannot imagine. Ensure that no furniture has any sharp edge. Many babies start walking by one year.
Never leave them on a cot without protective rails. If electrical sockets are near the floor make sure they are properly covered. Never assume that a toddler cannot put on a switch. He will conduct all sorts of experiments with whatever he gets.
Keep all medicines locked in a cabinet. Keep insecticides, detergents, cosmetics, after-shave lotion, floor and toilet cleaners out of your child’s reach. Cleaners are now available with safe lids which cannot be easily opened. It is better to use such containers.
It is a good idea to keep the bathrooms bolted from outside so that a young child does not accidentally enter it unattended.
Balconies should be enclosed in parapets high enough to prevent young children from trying to climb on top. Terraces should also be similarly covered.
Kitchen: Keep knives, forks, scissors and other sharp instruments safely. A child can open a gas knob out of curiosity. A gas alarm can be helpful. Promptly dispose off glass pieces or any broken object with sharp edges.
If you have accidentally spilled water or oil anywhere immediately clean the floor. Use floor tiles which are not slippery.
If you have a swimming pool attached to your house you need to be extremely vigilant to ensure that a young child does not go near it.
Every child should be made to understand that he should not believe a stranger and go with him. This is extremely important as sexual abuse of children is widely prevalent.
As for as possible, parents especially mother should take primary responsibility for the safety of children. No one else can love a child as much as his mother does.

Do not give hard candy: While virtually any food particle can cause choking hard candy which is smooth and spherical in shape is particularly dangerous as it can easily slip down the tongue. A few children have even died due to choking caused by hard candy. Hence avoid giving hard candy to children. Soft confectionery which is square or rectangular in shape and readily sticks to the tongue is safer.
