About childhood diseases
In spite of remarkable advances in the field of modern medicine children continue to suffer from many diseases. Infectious diseases due to bacteria, viruses and fungi are widely prevalent though many infections have been brought under control especially in developed countries. Smallpox has been eradicated from the earth. Polio has become quite uncommon thanks to vaccination. However some infections like AIDS and Hepatitis continue to pose challenges today. Unfortunately many children become victims of a dreaded disease like AIDS for no fault of theirs. Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis is also a serious problem in many parts of the world. It is necessary to have a holistic approach towards child health and childhood diseases. We need to look beyond merely giving medicines to cure diseases. All the factors which influence health should be considered and preserving health should be accorded greater priority.
Drugs can also cause diseases and they should be used judiciously. Hence more and more people are leaning towards Ayurveda and Naturo-therapy. As every system has its advantages and disadvantages there is a need to evolve an integrated system of health care. Psycho-somatic disorders are also on the rise. Many vague complaints in children are often due to psychological problems. Hence parents should give sufficient attention to the psychological health of children. Genetic and hereditary diseases are getting more attention today. Congenital abnormalities are also seen occasionally. We still do not know the exact causes of many diseases in children.
Prenatal diagnostic procedures are being used to detect diseases in the uterus. Some diseases like hydro-nephrosis and diaphragmatic hernia are even being operated on inside the womb. Unlike in adults chronic diseases are less common in children. They recover faster from any illness. Occasionally normal variations can cause undue anxiety to parents.
