Healthy lifestyle and disease prevention

Modern medicine is giving too much of importance to curing diseases but neglecting disease prevention.

Health of a person is influenced by multiple factors. This page deals with general measures for safeguarding health and preventing diseases.

Mind over matter: Mind has powerful influence over the body. Strong will can fight diseases as effectively as medicines.

A happy mind with a positive attitude is an important prerequisite for sound physical health. Always engage in useful activities so that the mind is not idle. Daily meditation helps in strengthening the mind.

Anger, greed, lust, egoism and jealousy destroy our peace of mind. It is futile to simply try to avoid these negative emotions. We have to overcome these negative emotions with positive ones.

How do we cultivate positive emotions like love, tolerance and forgiveness?

There is only one way. It is the realization of the oneness of creation; unshakable belief in the fact that the same universal spirit resides in each and every one of us and that whatever we do comes back to us.

Unfortunately today’s man is ignoring the spiritual dimension of life and this attitude is responsible for many of the problems including health problems.

Many symptoms, even in children are due to psychosomatic factors. It is foolish to simply look at the body, conduct all sorts of tests and declare the person as normal when, in fact, almost everything is abnormal with his mind.

Diseases like AIDS are usually due to leading an immoral life. Bad habits like cigarette smoking and alcoholism also lead to many diseases. Cigarette smoking not only harms the smoker but also other people who are nearby as passive smoking is also harmful. By strengthening family ties, exercising self-control and channeling our energy towards useful activities we can prevent such diseases.

AIR: Many infectious diseases are spread through air. Air pollution is another serious problem in many cities and can cause many health problems like asthma.

Ensure adequate natural lighting and ventilation of the house. Sunlight destroys many microorganisms.

Over crowding facilitates spread of air borne infections. Those working in industries should strictly follow all the safety precautions like wearing facemasks and protective glasses.

Water: Water is next in importance only to air for our survival. Water accounts for sixty percent of our body weight (more in newborn babies and small infants). Unfortunately many people in the world do not have access to clean drinking water especially in developing countries.

Water borne diseases continue to affect significant number of people. In the absence of safe public water supply people have no other option but to purify water at home before consumption. Several (Ad) water purifiers are available. Even (Ad) portable water purifiers are available so that you can purify water just before drinking when you go for picnics and tours.

Healthy diet: A balanced diet containing all the vitamins, minerals and trace elements is indispensable to keep diseases at bay.

Environment: Keeping our surroundings clean goes a long way in preventing many diseases. We should eliminate breeding grounds for disease carrying organisms like mosquitoes, flies and rats by proper drainage and disposal of garbage. Pet animals should also be kept clean and immunized. Some pets can predispose sensitive individuals to allergic diseases like asthma.

Role of music: Good music elevates the soul to a higher level. Indian classical music has profound impact on the mind. There are two broad types of Indian Classical music-Carnatic and Hindustani. The notes are same but the style of rendering a raga in the two types are different.

The ultimate goal of Indian classical music is also self-realization and it is closely related to Indian Spirituality. It is good to play some classical songs as soon as you get up in the morning.

The good vibrations fill the house and soothe the mind. Music therapy is being tried for some disorders like hypertension and mental illness. Listening to such music may also help in disease prevention.
