About me and this website - Dr Arun Kumar Suri
I was born in a small town in the state of Karnataka in South India. After completing my pre degree education I joined the Karnataka Government Medical College at Bellary which is now known as the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences in the year 1980 for doing my MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery) the basic qualification required for practicing modern medicine in India. The Medical College at Bellary is recognized by the Indian Medical Council which is the statutory body for controlling the medical profession. After successfully completing the course in the year 1986 I got myself registered with the Karnataka branch of Indian Medical Council on 19th August 1986. My registration number is 25221. After completing MBBS I joined Holdsworth Memorial hospital in Mysore in Karnataka and worked exclusively in the department of Pediatrics as a senior house officer for one year. I joined Bangalore Medical College also recognized by the Indian Medical Council in the year 1988 for doing a post-graduate diploma course in child health (DCH). I have also completed a post-graduate certificate course (distant learning) on adolescent health conducted by IMA AKN SINHA INSTITUTE. After completing DCH in the year 1990 I joined a small hospital in a place called Sringeri in Karnataka as Pediatrician and worked there for one year. During that period I was in charge of the pediatric department. I again joined the Holdsworth Memorial hospital as junior pediatrician and worked there from 1991 to 1995. Then I came to the neighboring state of Kerala where I have currently settled.
About this website
I started this website as I felt that the practice of pediatrics is more than just treating disease. Prospective Parents need to be psychologically prepared before the birth of a child. They have to be educated about the normal variations of children and the uniqueness of every child. Health of a child is influenced by so many factors. It is also extremely important to give sufficient attention to psychological and spiritual health of children. Prevention of illness both physical and psychological should be given first priority. Health of a nation depends on proper upbringing of children in an atmosphere of love, discipline and human values. In spite of spectacular inventions and discoveries modern medicine has several limitations. It continues to be mainly disease oriented. Hence many people are looking at alternative systems like Ayurveda. I have also completed an online course on Ayurvedic Care of Children conducted by Jiva Institute. It is desirable to combine modern scientific knowledge with ancient wisdom to evolve a comprehensive, integrated and holistic system of health care. A serious drawback of modern medicine is the non acceptance of the spiritual dimension of man. Incorporating spiritual principles in our practice will go a long way in improving the quality of health care. Many health problems are psychosomatic in nature and a spiritual attitude to life helps in mitigating psychological disorders. I firmly believe that a pediatrician should help parents to bring up children who are healthy in every sense of the word so thus they can become healthy adults and create a healthy society and hope this site can play a small role towards this goal.
