Feng shui is an ancient Chinese branch of knowledge dealing with the location, design and interior planning of buildings to get maximum benefit from the cosmic energy. It can be applied to both residential and business places. It shares some similarities with the Indian system of vaastu but has its own unique features.

We are tempted to ask whether Feng Shui has any scientific basis. We are living in the age of science and take pride in having scientific attitude to everything.

But the truth is that science has its limitations. All the spectacular discoveries and inventions have not ensured happiness for modern man. He continues to live under stress and with a constant feeling of insecurity.

Of late scientists have realized that the ancient scriptures in many countries contain many facts only recently discovered by them.

Some of the facts mentioned in Feng Shui books simply reflect common sense. For example a typical Feng Shui book says not to have a house close to a sea. Think of tsunami and you know the reason. Another fact is that a house should not be at a lower level than the road. Just imagine what happens when there is heavy rain and your house is at a lower level than the road. Your house will get inundated.

Another concept in Feng Shui is that of poison arrow. One example of a poison arrow is a road directly pointing to a house. In one of the places I lived there was a garment shop on the main road. It was directly facing another road joining the main road at nearly right angles.

Once a bus coming from that road lost control and rammed into the garment shop. Luckily the owner escaped unhurt. These examples show that there is some sense in Feng Shui.

If you want to construct a house that is one hundred percent Feng Shui compliant (or vaastu compliant) today you will have to go to some other planet and build the first house there. Many factors are beyond your control.

But many Feng Shui tips can be incorporated into your life. It may be worth trying them as they are harmless and may even help you in some way. For example you can easily calculate your kua number (also called gua) and find out your favorable directions and unfavorable once.

Many symbols are available and they can be placed at recommended places. Feng Shui tips are supposed to bring health, wealth, fame and improve relationships between family members.

When we consider psychological problems which are on the rise we have many unanswered questions. Human mind continues to baffle scientists.

This universe is nothing but condensed energy as science has revealed that matter and energy are inter-convertible. Every object must be having its own unique energy field. Perhaps the symbols recommended by Femg Shui have energy fields which may influence human mind in a way not yet known.

Ancient Indian scriptures mention aura (energy field) and recently scientists have confirmed the presence of aura around human beings using special camera (a technique known as Kirlian photography). Perhaps the energy fields of Feng Shui symbols interact with our energy fields in some way.

Hence it may be worth following the recommendations of Feng Shui. Many symbols enhance the aesthetic appearance of the house.
