Toys for kids -learn how to choose

Toys play a very important role in the lives of children. Many parents however do not think much while buying toys for kids. Often they yield to the whimsies of children.

Toys should serve two purposes-to entertain and to help children develop their creativity and skills.

It should be remembered that the costliest toys are not necessarily the most suitable. It is very important to ensure that the toys are safe for kids.

While selecting toys for kids parents should select those, which are appropriate for the age of the child.

For young infants bright colored toys of different shapes and sizes, which produce sound, are suitable. These toys stimulate the nerves of the eye, help in the development of the corresponding areas of the brain and thus help the child in appreciating different colors, shapes and sizes.

Toys, which produce sound, stimulate the nerves of the ears and the corresponding area of the brain. A two-month-old normal baby can follow an object through 180 degrees. By making the baby follow the toys the muscles of the eye are exercised.

After four months babies begin to reach for and grasp objects and eye hand coordination starts developing. Light toys which can be held by a baby (like rings) are suitable at this age.

It is quite common for babies to try to put objects in their mouths. Very small objects should always be kept out of their reach. Even after infancy young children often put objects in mouth.

Hence small objects and toys with easily detachable small parts should always be kept away from them. It is quite common to see young children who swallow coins and are brought to a hospital.

After infancy buildings blocks and interlocking toys help in stimulating the imagination of children. They may be shown models and asked to replicate them.

Toys for kids of various age groups are available if you go for a good brand. But it should always be remembered that every child is unique and exceptions may be seen, both ways-a child may be below average in one but above average in another.

Parents should try to avoid disappointment in children, which may erode their confidence. It is always better to start with easy tasks and then encourage them to achieve more.

Children in general are quite sensitive and repeated failures may have serious impact on their minds which may affect them even in their adulthood. Every small achievement must be acknowledged and praised.

Today various video games are available and children of all ages enjoy them. Here again start with easy ones and then go for more complicated ones. These games help in improving concentration and memory. Never allow them to play video games based on violent themes. This can cause psychological problems in children.

Encourage children to play outdoor games also. Many children get addicted to video games and spend most of their time playing them and confine themselves to the house. Lack of physical activity results in many problems like childhood obesity, joint pains and poor effort tolerance.
